Campanula

(Campanulaceae - bellflower family)
About 300 spp. of ann, bien or peren herbs distributed throughout the N Hemi but principally in the Caucasus, Balkan and Mediterranean regions. Popular as garden subject because of showy flowers and cultural ease.

rotundifolia peren • ht 3"; fl stalks to 12" • zones 3-10

bluebells of Scotland; harebell

new, native, rock garden, dry - moist, sun - part shade
Northern Hemisphere

Diminutive blue flowers bloom in nodding clusters from late spring to first frost, flowers are ¾" across. C. rotundifolia describes the round basal leaves but upper leaves are much more grass-like. Grows wild in meadows and on rocky slopes in dry, open, sandy places but prefers higher ground. Used in Scotland to make blue dye for tartans. Deer resistant, attracts butterflies, can seed lavishly.
