Pleioblastus

(Gramineae - grass family)
Perhaps 40 or so species of mostly low-growing, vigorously spreading bamboos. Most are native to Japan. The smaller species are suitable for use as ground covers. A number of species which were formerly classified as Arundinarias are now included here.

argenteostriatus max ht 3' • max culm dia ¼" • min temp 0°F

okina-dake

ground cover, sun - part shade
Japan

Leaves are green, striped with white. Variegation is sharpest in new foliage, becoming less apparent as the leaves age. May prefer a bit of shade, but does well here in full sun. A vigorous spreader, it is useful as ground cover but needs restraint.

up to 1' tall, cat # 8G5D1 $16.95 each.
1'-2' tall, cat # 8G5D2 $27.95 each.

chino murakamiansis max ht 10' • max culm dia ¾" • min temp 10°F

$24.95 each

humilis max ht 7' • max culm dia ¼" • min temp 0°F

(bamboo)

container, ground cover, sun - part shade
Japan

This attractive species with dense, dark green foliage makes a very effective erosion-preventing groundcover. Can also serve as a good hedge where conditions are favorable. Grows well in sun or part shade, but may look most handsome when given a bit of shade. Under good conditions it can spread quickly.

cat # 8G5J
$16.95 each

kongosanensis aureostriatus max ht 6' • max culm dia ¼" • min temp 0°F

(bamboo)

variegated medake

edible, container, ground cover, sun - part shade
Japan

Many of the leaves on this cultivar are strongly variegated with distinct white stripes. A slow spreader, useful for hedges or screens. Has an unusual "running and clumping" growth habit; tends to form scattered clumps, with spaces in between. Produces strong, straight culms which are useful for many purposes. Widely used in its native region for fans, fences, and stakes. Shoots are edible.

cat # 8H5G
$28.95 each
