General Information: Among the most vigorous and cold tolerant of the giant hardy Bamboos, this species is relatively quick to reach mature size. Both the common name and Latin species name reflect the vigor and longevity of this plant, with “vivax” meaning “long-lived” and “vivier” being the French term for a fish pond, which was considered to be a source of life. The thin-walled, slightly zig-zag culms (canes) are tough. They are favored for splitting and weaving. The shoots are of excellent quality for eating. A particularly handsome species with masses of large, drooping leaves giving a tropical appearance even in temperate climates.
Cultivation Details: Running Bamboo such as this species can be aggressive and form large colonies. Consider installing a rhizome barrier, berm, trench, or adopting a strict mowing plan to limit the spread of this species.
Growing Requirements: Plant in full sun. Does not tolerate very wet soils, although our test plantings have shown better water tolerance than other species. Succeeds in most soil types. Suitable for most soil pH.
