General Information: A gorgeous dwarf Bamboo species in the Grass Bamboo section. The Japanese name for this species is Fuiri-Shiiya-Zasa. A running species that remains tiny in New England, to 2 feet, reaching 3-6 feet in ideal conditions in warmer climates (Zones 7 or warmer). They form a dense, strikingly ornamental groundcover. The thick leaves are distinctively dark green and striped with white or cream. As with other Sasaella species, they tolerate mowing and trimming quite well and may be used as a lawn replacement. Early spring mowing encourages variegated leaf growth, as the plant has been observed to set mostly green leaves during warm months. This dwarf species, unlike most other Bamboos, is well-suited for container growing and, owing to the plant’s light and soil preferences, may be suitable as a houseplant.
Cultivation Details: Running Bamboo such as this species can be aggressive and form large colonies. Consider installing a rhizome barrier, berm, trench, or adopting a strict mowing plan to limit the spread of this species.
Growing Requirements: Prefers part to full shade. Does not tolerate full sun. Prefers moist, well-drained soils. Does not tolerate wet soils. Tolerant of most soil types. Suitable for most soil pH.
