Our newest selection of Lowbush Blueberry is ‘Ruby Carpet’. This plant was selected from a wild population in Maine with stunning red fall foliage.
This petite variety is very productive, giving an abundance of bluish-black fruit. Fruits are produced on a two-year cycle, with alternating years of growth and fruit set. Producers of these berries in Maine will often divide their fields, mowing or burning half to induce vegetative growth while the other half is in fruit production. True to the name, ‘Ruby Carpet’ is a carpet-forming ground cover and tops off at right about 6 inches! This species is perfect as a ground cover, for filling in sandy or thin soils, for attracting wildlife, and for food. The miniature berries are easily collected and can be frozen or dried en masse for use year round.
Plant in full sun. Prefers acidic, well-drained, sandy or thin soils. Flowers emerge May-Jun. Fruits Jun-Jul, with occasional flowers and fruits occurring in late fall (known as remontant flowering).
Plants are considered self-fertile, however they will produce more abundantly with another variety nearby. Consider including our native subspecies, Vaccinium angustifolium laevifolium for increased fruit production.
