Symphyotrichum novae-angliae – New England Aster

General Information: This native Aster is a remarkable eye-catching native. We offer native selections collected from populations around the farm, although named cultivars and hybrids are available elsewhere. Composite flowers occur at the ends of the rough, tall, and bunching stems in clusters. Flowers are 1½ inches in diameter and range in color from purple to lavender. Plants can reach 6′ in height. Easy to grow and maintain. The flowers are edible, making a festive addition to dishes. This plant looks especially nice in cut flower arrangements. Copious amounts of flowers are produced from an individual plant, and they fill vases easily creating a showy display. A necessary end-of-season nectar source for migratory pollinators and native beneficial insects. Known to also have medicinal uses, especially among Indigenous Peoples of North America.

Cultivation Details: Known to occur in swampy to very dry sites, but is most commonly found along roadsides and paths. Clumps to fill in bare spots, and if allowed to reseed on bare soil, large patches can form. Blooms late summer through fall (Aug-Nov). Consider pairing with Symphyotrichum laeve, Solidago odora, and other fall-blooming perennials.

Growing Requirements: Plant in full or partial sun. Prefers wet to moist soils. Uniquely tolerant of swampy areas. Tolerates sand, loam and clay soil.
