General Information: A member of the Grass-Bamboo tribe, with large, dark green leaves to about 10″ long and 2″ wide. The prefix “Indo-” refers to the Indian Subcontinent and “-calamus” refers to a genus of Palm Tree with similar uses as this Bamboo. The word “latifolius” is Latin meaning “broad and wide leaf.” The cultivar name ‘Solidus’ refers to the culms (canes), which are solid in cross-section. These plants are useful for crafting chop sticks, knitting needles, incense sticks, brushes, and other such items. Some sources report this species as being hardy to Zone 7, however our plantings have survived decades protected from harsh winds in Zone 6a. In colder regions the plant remains short, occasionally reaching 3 feet tall, whereas in warmer climates they may reach 8-10 feet.
Cultivation Details: Running Bamboo such as this species can be aggressive and form large colonies. Consider installing a rhizome barrier, berm, trench, or adopting a strict mowing plan to limit the spread of this species. While the plants tend to clump in the first few years after planting, they will eventually run. Installing a rhizome barrier is a practical way to keep these plants where they were intended to be.
Growing Requirements: Prefers partial sun to dappled shade. Tolerates full sun if sufficiently moist. Prefers moist, well-draining soils. Tolerates most soil types. Suitable for most soil pH.
