General Information: An underappreciated Eastern and Central US native wildflower named for the Anise scent obtained by crushing the leaves. A low-maintenance “edimental” that is perfect for rewilding recently cleared sites. In the garden, Sweet Goldenrod adds a late season splash of color while benefiting native pollinators in fall. This humble plant is the state herb of Delaware. Considered endangered in New Hampshire, and threatened in Vermont and Ohio.
Cultivation Details: Flowers Jul-Oct. Unlike other Goldenrods, this species does not heavily colonize areas. They are slow to spread by rhizome and tend to form clumps. For quick propagation, dig plants in late winter after a year or two of establishment and separate the crowns. Spacing of propagated plants can be dense or loose depending on preference. This species will hybridize with other Solidago species, and many hybrids can be found in the wild. Ideal for pocket prairies, prairie restoration, lawn replacement, rewilding, pollinator gardens, medicinal herb gardens, and as a companion plant to almost all other flowers which bloom at the same time.
Edible Qualities: Flowers and leaves can be used to make a pleasant-tasting tea. The leaf tea is a favorite on hot summer days at the farm. Pairs well in a blend with Sweetfern leaves (Comptonia peregrina). This plant has many medicinal uses as well.
Growing Requirements: Plant in full sun to partial shade. Naturally found in open woods with dry, sandy soils. Tolerates most soil types. Especially tolerant of very sandy and heavy clay soils. Moist to dry soils. For best success in dry sites, water thoroughly when planting and apply a deep layer of mulch. Suitable for mildly acidic, neutral, and mildly alkaline soils.
