General Information: This native upright perennial with stunning red flowers certainly deserves the title of royalty. Of the other red-flowered species in the genus Silene native to North America, this one grows tallest. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and fire suppression, these plants are becoming increasingly rare in their native ranges. Home growers can serve in their conservation. Stunning blooms emerge from June through August; in part due to their red color, they are highly attractive to Hummingbirds. The brown open-ended seed pods develop a few weeks after the flowers are pollinated, dispersing hundreds to thousands of minute seeds. Longer lived than other Silene species, but still considered a short-lived perennial, it is best to allow Royal Catchfly to reseed. We recommend spreading those seeds around on the surface of bare garden soil each year to encourage the spread and promote genetic diversity of this species.
Cultivation Details: This plant is self-fertile. Only one plant is required to produce seeds. These plants do not run and will send up one or occasionally multiple stems each year. Stems may bend in storms or high winds and may require staking. Consider pairing with other selections from our “Attracts Wildlife” category. A great addition to pollinator gardens, rewilding, native plant gardens, for mass plantings, border plantings, foundation plantings, or along fence lines and roadsides.
Growing Requirements: Plant in full sun to partial shade. Plants in partial shade may not flower as prolifically as those in full sun. For best results, plant in sites that receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Prefers moist, well-drained soils. Suitable for sandy, loamy, or clay soils provided there is adequate drainage. Does not tolerate soggy soils. Suitable for neutral and mildly alkaline soils.
