A varietal similar to Wild Ginger, but with smooth, semi-evergreen leaves and longer, more slender rhizomes. Carries similar growth traits as Wild Ginger, bearing large, heart-shaped, dark green leaves. Spreads slowly, forming a solid cover. One of the first plants to emerge in spring. Useful as an understory planting in a woodland garden, rock garden, or around foundations.
The creeping rhizome has a Ginger-like odor and flavor, and has been used as a substitute for that spice. Wild Ginger, commonly found in Canada, was the original flavor source for Ginger Ale. Caution is advised when consuming the plant, as A. canadense contains Aristolochic Acid and Asarone – chemicals that have been deemed toxic by the FDA. Despite this, the plant has a lengthy history of use amongst the Indigenous Peoples of North America.
Plant in partial to full shade. Prefers alkaline soils, but will tolerate neutral to slightly acidic soils. Tolerates most soil types. Prefers moist, well-drained soils.
