A low-growing evergreen with grass-like foliage. These plants form a dense clump. Pink, clover-like flowers appear on upright stalks from June to August. The species name “maritima” describes the coastal habitats these plants are often found in. As a result of being adapted to seaside areas, the plant is also suitable for dry areas, foundation plantings, alpine gardens, rock gardens, and areas with high salinity. This species has been studied as a potential phytoremediation plant, with the ability to tolerate and accumulate copper derivatives that would otherwise be lethal to other plants. The plant has been reported as being edible, although not commonly foraged. There are also vague reports that the plant has medicinal properties.
Plant in full sun. Prefers well-drained soil. Tolerant of dry and moist soils, but does not tolerate standing water. Tolerant of most soil types. An excellent choice for areas with maritime exposure.
