General Information: A large variety of Bamboo grass that can reach up to 6 feet in warm climates under optimal conditions. Spreads to form a thick, deep ground cover. The leaves are culturally significant as medicine and as a regional sushi wrap in some areas of Japan. They also have utilitarian applications as an absorbent padding. Leaf edges are easily damaged even by light frosts, leading the plant to develop a pleasantly mottled or variegated appearance in colder areas during late fall and winter. The resulting whitish coloration of frost-touched leaves does not impact the overall health of the plant and adds a seasonal appeal.
Cultivation Details: Running Bamboo such as this species can be aggressive and form large colonies. Consider installing a rhizome barrier, berm, trench, or adopting a strict mowing plan to limit the spread of this species. Plants can spread up to 18″ per year. Tolerates annual mowing. Cut back plants in early spring for a fresh flush of taller canes, or cut back during the growing period for a shorter ground cover.
Growing Requirements: Tolerant of full sun to nearly full shade. Prefers rich, evenly-moist, well-drained soil. Tolerates wet soil, but not standing water. Tolerates most soil types. Suitable for most soil pH.
