General Information: Very large, bold, handsome, pleated leaves to 4 inches wide by 14 inches long, giving a striking tropical effect. An aggressive spreader with large, leathery leaves. The species name “palmata,” meaning “hand-shaped,” references the plant’s leaves, which can be harvested en masse for animal bedding or fodder. Of the several Grass Bamboo species we offer, this is perhaps the variety with the largest leaves and therefore the most well-suited for animal fodder. The plant is also useful as a small hedge, and the stems can be used for incense sticks or skewers. The arching habit of the leaves, coupled with the density at which these plants grow, makes this plant especially attractive to ground-dwelling birds and small mammals. Some sources report this plant as being hardy to USDA Zone 7, however our plantings have happily survived for decades in Zone 6. In colder regions, this Bamboo will remain short, rarely exceeding 2 feet, while in warmer regions the plant is known to reach 7 feet.
Cultivation Details: Running Bamboo such as this species can be aggressive and form large colonies. Consider installing a rhizome barrier, berm, trench, or adopting a strict mowing plan to limit the spread of this species.
Growing Requirements: Plant in partial shade. May tolerate full sun if kept sufficiently moist. Tolerant of most soil types. Prefers moist, rich soils. Does not tolerate wet soils or standing water. Suitable for most soil pH.
