General Information: A very cold-tolerant, deeply-purple Raspberry. This variety is non-suckering, instead with multiple canes forming in a cluster. This variety is often described as floricane (producing fruits on second-year growth), however some growers have documented occasional primocane (fruits produced on first-year growth) yields on mature plantings. Produces high yields of berries, on average 5/8 inch diameter, occasionally to 1 inch. Trellising is recommended. A versatile dual-purpose Raspberry selection known for excellent fresh eating and making an exceptional wine. Developed in the late 1960’s at Iowa State University. The cold-hardiness of this plant was tested in Alaska, where canes overwintered in Zone 1, with no damage to buds, flowers, or reduction in fruit set.
Cultivation Details: This plant is self-fertile. Only one is needed to produce fruit. Plants should start producing fruit the year after planting. Once the first berries set, a bush will produce for 6 weeks, usually from late July through late August. For the most abundant production of fruits, cut the apex of the main stem in early summer once new canes are nearly full grown but before flowers emerge. Even pinching an inch or two from the top of a cane at this stage of growth will encourage branching and maximize fruit set.
Growing Requirements: Plant in Full Sun. Will tolerate some shade once fully established. Prefers slightly acidic, well-drained, loamy or sandy soils. Intolerant of heavy clay soils, but will tolerate clays if amended with organic matter. Suitable for mildly acidic, neutral, and mildly alkaline soils.
