General Information: A fairly quick-to-spread groundcover that adds textural appeal with thick, leathery (1½”) leaves. While the diminutive size of these plants leads one to think that they are herbaceous, they are actually considered sub-shrubs! Foliage is emerald green and appears crinkled – the leaves have beautifully ruffled lobes. Leaves turn vivid burgundy in the fall and are semi-evergreen down to Zones 6 and 7.
Edible Qualities: Plants are self-fertile. Only one is required for fruit set. Small white flowers emerge in spring followed by a crop of yellow-orange fruits in late spring and early summer. Fruits are edible and tasty, but tiny. The fruits may go unnoticed if devoured by birds first.
Cultivation Details: A durable ground cover and an excellent addition to containers or a rock garden, as they gently creep and spill over edges. Mature height 12″ Can be used as a lawn replacement, and handles light foot traffic. Deer will not bother them. Heavy clay, low light, limited airflow, and dampness may create fungal issues. They may develop sparsely thorny stems over time, so gloves may be helpful when working with them!
Growing Requirements: Prefers full sun to part shade. Performs well in hot, dry areas as long as they get some moisture. Most successful in moist, well-drained soil. Regular watering will help them get established, but once established they are tough, drought tolerant, and easy to maintain. Most successful in sandy, loamy, or organic soils. Suitable for mildly acidic and neutral soils.
