Bamboo goes through a shooting phase from Spring to Mid-Summer. Orders received after May 1st may not be able to ship until Mid-July. Please note that some years bamboo incurs winter injury from extreme cold and will only be available in July after the new growth hardens.

General Information: One of the best species for combining cold hardiness with large size. Reasonably tolerant of cold, dry winds. Culms (canes) are strongly upright and nearly straight. Cultivated in China for edible shoots, which have only a slightly acrid flavor, even when raw. A particularly prolific producer of shoots, this species begins shooting later than other Phyllostachys species and can continue to produce shoots throughout the summer if the moisture supply is steady. Culms are thin-walled, strong, and nearly circular in cross-section. Tests have shown this species to produce outstandingly high yields of poles and pulpwood. Large, productive of both wood and shoots, fast-growing, and good-quality timber. Nodal ridges (“joints”) are narrow and only slightly elevated, the least prominent of any Phyllostachys species. Culms are well suited for splitting into strips for weaving.

Cultivation Details: Running Bamboo such as this species can be aggressive and form large colonies. Consider installing a rhizome barrier, berm, trench, or adopting a strict mowing plan to limit the spread of this species.

Growing Requirements: Plant in full sun. Does not tolerate wet soils. Succeeds in most soil types and conditions. Suitable for most soil pH
