Rubus odoratus – Purple Flowering Raspberry

General Information: An attractive but seldom-cultivated berry bush with large, Maple-like leaves and naturally thornless canes. Easily identifiable, even in winter by the flaking, somewhat papery, tan bark. The gorgeous, Rose-like, faintly fragrant, purple flowers about 1½ inches across are produced most prolifically in June and July. Sometimes the flowers occur in our plantings all the way through September. The blooms attract a wide variety of pollinators. The fruit, which ripens from July to September, somewhat resembles a cap-shaped Red Raspberry. They are edible and flavorful, a favorite of birds and wildlife, but somewhat dry and may not be produced in significant quantities. Like other Rubus species, there are also medicinal qualities attributed to all parts of the plant.

Edible Qualities: Purple-Flowering Raspberries can be made into pies, jams, jellies, and are a suitable substitute for most recipes that call for Raspberry. They combine well in recipes with other berries also.

Cultivation Details: These plants are self-fertile. Only one plant is required to bear fruit, however fruiting is limited with singular plants. For maximum fruit production, plant 2 or more within 15 feet of each other. Unlike most Raspberries, the stems are thornless and perennial, making them very desirable to grow as a low-maintenance “edimental” in areas frequented by children and pets. Useful as a border plant, tall ground cover, or foundation planting. The dense foliage of a mature bush casts so much shade that all but spring ephemerals are kept from growing under them. These plants are clumpers which spread slowly.

Growing Requirements: Plant in part sun to nearly full shade. Will tolerate full sun if kept sufficiently moist and receiving some shade, such as from a tree, during the hottest point of the day. Plants in full shade may not fruit as prolifically as those with more sun exposure. Tolerant of most soil types. Prefers moist soils. Tolerant of poorly drained soil. Suitable for growing in mildly acidic, neutral, and mildly alkaline soils.
