Previously, Gillenia trifoliata, this tall slender perennial blooms in early summer in the northeast. A profusion of star-shaped white flowers adorn thin red branches.
This unique, usually white, sometimes pinkish-blossoming perennial, fills dry and/or shady sites with three-season interest. The tall woody rootstock attracts attention after it blooms, red calyxes persist. A good choice for a shady location. Red foliage adds fall color.
Leaf blades are divided into three, narrow, toothed lobes, flowers have thin petals.
Blooms spring to early summer.
Hardy to −4 °F or lower, should be planted in a sheltered location (if the cold is a factor, zone 5 or below).
Acidic or neutral soil. Dry to moist soils
Shade or partial shade
The root was dried and powdered by Native Americans and used as both a laxative and emetic.
