General Information: This reliable, low-growing, perennial produces a mass of wonderful light blue flowers in spring, a welcome nectar source for insects. Blooms emerge between April and May and persist for about one month. Following the bloom period, the foliage forms a solid blanket along the ground, curbing weeds. Creeping Jacob’s Ladder is easy to propagate by division or seed, although the plant is not an aggressive spreader by either of these means. Plants are desirable to Bumblebees, Butterflies, Moths, and other pollinators. The subtle blue hue of the flowers and the finely dissected leaves add interest and complement yellow-blossoming flowers nicely. Although not related to Valerian (Valeriana spp – Family Caprifoliaceae), they are sometimes referred to as “American Valerian” or “Greek Valerian” due to the historical medicinal uses. Both Polemonium reptans and Valeriana have been used medicinally for similar conditions. Threatened and endangered, or rare in many states where it naturally occurs. This plant is a great choice for a low maintenance area, it is reliable and requires very little attention.
Cultivation Details: Creeping Jacob’s Ladder is an excellent ground cover for slightly shaded areas. Ideal for partially shady rock gardens, groundcovers under shrubs or trees, along shady fence lines, foundations, walls, or in woodland gardens. Consider pairing with taller shade-loving perennials such as Goat’s Beard (Aruncus dioicus), Blue-Stemmed Goldenrod (Solidago caesia), Giant Scouring Rush (Equisetum hyemale robustrum), Hearts-A-Bustin’ (Euonymous americanus), Paw Paw (Asimina triloba), Purple Flowering Raspberry (Rubus odoratus), and Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana).
Growing Requirements: Plant in shade to nearly full sun, though does not tolerate full sun in very warm climates. Plants in full sun require consistently moist soils. Prefers moist, humus-rich, loamy, well-drained soils. Tolerates sandy or clay soils provided there is sufficient organic mulch and good drainage. Suitable for neutral soils. Does not tolerate very acidic or very alkaline soils.
