Viburnum acerifolium – Maple-leaved Viburnum

A low, branching, rounded shrub with Maple-like leaves. Bears clusters of small white flowers in late spring, followed by purple-black berries. The distinctive yellow, purple-red, or lavender autumn foliage color is quite handsome. Fall colors are variable depending on light conditions. An excellent choice for attracting wildlife. Numerous species of insects feed on the nectar from the attractive flowers. Birds and mammals feed on the berries. A wonderful addition to woodland and shade gardens, rock gardens, foundation plantings, border plantings, and for rewilding. The plant spreads slowly by suckers. While reportedly edible, the plant’s berries are insipid and better suited for wildlife consumption. The plant is used medicinally amongst Indigenous Peoples.

Plant in part sun to nearly full shade. Tolerates full sun if kept sufficiently moist. Prefers moist, well-drained soils. Tolerant of most soil types. Especially useful in dry, shady, sandy areas.
