Lobelia cardinalis (cardinal flower)

   Prefers rich, moist, soils; can tolerate brief flooding.  Full sun to part shade, if in full sun, needs moisture. Mulch for best results.

   Typically grows in moist locations along streams, and swamps. A clump-forming perennial, with vivid spikes of large, cardinal red flowers. Tubular flowers that are very attractive      to butterflies and hummingbirds.

Common name is in reference to the red robes worn by Roman Catholic cardinals

   No serious insect or disease problems. Foliage contains alkaloids that are very toxic to humans if ingested.
