Semiarundinaria fastuosa ‘Viridis’ – Japanese Palm Tree Bamboo

General Information: A stately and handsome Bamboo, with straight, vertical culms (canes). Although this species is classified as a runner, they are relatively slow spreaders, and quite cold-hardy. Long internodes reportedly make the canes of this variety a suitable material for making flutes. The culms are straight and round, but the wood is relatively weak. While the shoots of this species are edible, they are small and rather fibrous in our climate. We suspect in warmer regions, where the shoots may grow larger, that the palatability of this variety is much like the straight species, sweet and free of acridity. It is reported that heavy harvests of shoots will weaken the overall vigor of the plants. We have seen in our test plantings that the leaves of this species are susceptible to frost damage, especially from wind chill. The leaf edges often partly or nearly completely turn brown, giving the plant a somewhat variegated appearance. Some leaves are impacted more than others and may become 80% or more affected. While the leaves may appear distressed or even unsightly, especially if planted in an exposed location, the overall health of the plant is not impacted and a flush of fresh green leaves will occur each year in late spring.

Cultivation Details: Running Bamboo such as this species can be aggressive and form large colonies. Consider installing a rhizome barrier, berm, trench, or adopting a strict mowing plan to limit the spread of this species. Tolerant of heavy winds and salt air (but not salt water), this plant makes an excellent living hedge in maritime areas in warmer regions.

Growing Requirements: Plant in full sun to dappled shade. Plants are slower to reach their full height in shade. Prefers moist, rich soils. Does not tolerate dry soils. Tolerant of most soil types. Does not tolerate standing water. Suitable for most soil pH.
