Growing Requirements: Plant in full sun to part shade. Plants in full sun require consistently moist soils. Prefers moist, well-drained soils. Suitable for sandy, loamy, gravelly, clay, or average garden soils. Uniquely tolerant of gravelly soils as well as clay soils provided they are well-drained, i.e. on a slope. Suitable for mildly acidic and neutral soils.
Fun Facts: The genus name for Witch Hazels, Hamamelis, derives from the Greek words “Hama” meaning “at the same time,” and “Melon,” meaning fruit. The name references the fact that it often takes a year for the fruits to mature, with the previous year’s fruits maturing at the same time the current year’s flowers emerge. Ozark Witch Hazel is unique compared to other members of this genus in that the flowers and fruits do not mature simultaneously, because this species does not flower in fall.
