General Information: A delicate, graceful wildflower with blooms that resemble Butterflies. The staggered blooms of this species boast a long-blossoming period of elegant, miniature, pink butterfly-shaped flowers. This native wildflower was named after the German-born botanist Ferdinand Jacob Lindheimer. In 2007, the genus was changed to Oenothera, however Gaura is often still used. ‘Siskyou Pink’ is an intensely rose-pink cultivar, starting with deep maroon buds. Blooms appear May-August. Flower stalks are wand-like, and can be wiry, thus tending to sprawl and sway in the wind.
Cultivation Details: North American native, most commonly found in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Thrives in dry and sandy, well-draining soils, but prefers some moisture. An ideal choice for xeriscaping. Likes full sun but can tolerate partial sun in warmer regions. These plants grow best when allowed to spread out, so give them some space! As flowers drop and fade, new flowers emerge. The blossoming period often extends spring through summer. Excellent as a cut flower in bouquets. Adds charm to any perennial garden, en masse as a native cover for naturalizing dry areas, including rock gardens. Deer resistant, somewhat rabbit resistant. A bumblebee and pollinator favorite!
Growing Requirements: Sun to part sun in well-draining soil. Prefers some afternoon shade in very hot climates. Can be drought tolerant once established but prefers some moisture. Long tap roots make this plant drought tolerant but also hard to transplant once established. Suitable for mildly acidic, neutral, and mildly alkaline soils.
