Solidago caesia – Blue-Stemmed Goldenrod

General Information: This species is distinguished by graceful, slender, arching purple stems with a chalky bloom and compact clusters of fragrant golden flowers distributed like pearls along the stem. Unusual for a Goldenrod, this species grows mainly in forests in nearly full shade. The plant does well in full sun as long as the soil is not too dry. Unlike other Goldenrod species, Blue-Stemmed Goldenrod clumps to form small patches of a few clonal individuals.

Cultivation Details:  A lovely addition to a shade garden, woodland garden, field edges, or native pollinator garden. A late Summer wildflower which blooms from August – October. The blue stems are an equally appealing ornamental feature for the Spring and Summer months as well.  Grows well under shade trees, along walls, fences, borders, walkways, and foundations. Consider pairing with Asters (Symphyotrichum spp.) and other fall-blooming perennials. Attracts pollinators.

Growing Requirements: Plant in partial sun to nearly full shade. Tolerant of most soil types and conditions.
