Bamboo goes through a shooting phase from Spring to Mid-Summer. Orders received after May 1st may not be able to ship until Mid-July. Please note that some years bamboo incurs winter injury from extreme cold and will only be available in July after the new growth hardens.

General Information: Culms (canes) are strongly upright, sometimes sinuous, and tend to arch at the tips from the weight of the foliage. They have very prominent nodes (joints). The wood of this Bamboo is described as being strong and useful. Shoots are of excellent quality for eating. Considered one of the best species for edible shoot production. In China, this species reportedly provides the earliest spring shoots available in the markets. This cultivar has now been through several winters in our outdoor plantings and has shown very good cold hardiness. During the coldest winter, we experienced extreme lows of -8°F. Even in years with extended periods of bitter cold and windy weather, with wind chills as low as -15°F, this species has retained greenery. In a location sheltered from the wind, Phyllostachys nidularia ‘Smoothsheath’ suffered only minor leaf injury.

Edible and Useful Qualities: Good quality wood. Excellent edible shoots. Very cold hardy.

Cultivation Details: Running Bamboo such as this species can be aggressive and form large colonies. Consider installing a rhizome barrier, berm, trench, or adopting a strict mowing plan to limit the spread of this species.

Growing Requirements: Plant in full sun. Tolerates shade and dappled sun conditions, but grows sparsely and shorter. Does not tolerate wet soils. Succeeds in most soil types.
